How To Choose A Great Niche For My Blog?

How to choose a really good niche for my blog, what would be some good methods or some different criteria’s for choosing a niche?

When you blog about your hobby or interests then you will enjoy updating your blog and can earn money writing about something you love. If you want a more serious, money making blog then you may want to do a lot of research to find a very profitable niche for your blog. Of course, you can have more than one blog so you can try both options and possibly earn a nice income with both blogs.

There are many people that blog simply for the fun of it and others that blog for the purpose of making money. There are many topics that you can choose from to blog about and it can get quite overwhelming trying to choose from. Here are a few ideas to help you choose a blogging topic.

Many people blog about their favorite hobby. Blogging about your hobby or something that interests you is a great way to build a blog as you know about your topic. It is easier to write about something that you love than to write about something you have little knowledge of. It is also easier to stay motivated with updating your blog when you love what you are writing about. Hobbies may include model cars, scrapbooking, crafts, dirt bike riding or any other hobby. Blogging about your hobby is also a great way to connect with other people that share your love for that topic.

If you have either an online or an offline business you can blog about it. You can even start an online business with your blogs. Blogging is a fantastic way to promote any business and help to bring new customers to the business.

If you post to a blog while traveling it is a great way for your friends and family to experience the trip with you by reading your blog updates. When you blog about your experiences you can also look back later and remember that trip for years to come.

Do you have pets or are you passionate about animals? There are hundreds of people that blog about their pets.  Maybe you have a house full of different animals or maybe you have one breed of dog that you show at competitions, either way, there is always a story to be shared when you have pets. Blogging about your pet will give you and your readers a lot of enjoyment.

You can have a blog that is about nothing in general but just about your life, your loves, your thoughts and your experiences. You can blog about taking the kids to the park, blog about your love life, blog about your feelings or a camping trip. Life is full of experiences, both good and bad, and can make for a very interesting blog.

You really can blog about absolutely anything and these are just a few ideas to get you started with choosing a blogging topic. Have a think about what you love in life and what you would love to write about. Think about areas in which you have a lot of knowledge that you would love to share with others. Soon you will have your blog created and you can even monetize that blog and earn some money with it. Why not earn a little bit of money while writing about something you love.

There are different methods for choosing a niche, in fact if you read five different eBooks on blogging you will probably get five different criteria for choosing a niche. The first two options are to either choose a niche based on a topic that you are passionate about or choose a niche based on how profitable it may be.

You also need to decide on which type of blog you want to create. Do you want one big niche blog to become a type of authority website that will make a lot of money or do you want to build multiple small niche blogs each earning a little money?

Both of these options work well and can be very profitable so this is really a personal choice as to whether you want to create lots of small blogs or work on one big one.

Choosing a Niche for Multiple Small Blogs

If you decide to build multiple small sites then it is recommended to choose a niche based on products that are popular and sell well. You will need to do some extensive keyword research when creating small blogs as you do not want too much competition. If there is a lot of competition then you will need to spend too much time to rank well against your competition. The idea with small blogs is to choose keywords with low competition so you can easily achieve a good search engine ranking.

As you won't be spending a lot of time on each blog it is best to choose a niche based on profitability rather than choosing a topic you are passionate about.

Choosing a Niche for One Authority Blog

If you choose to create one big authority blog then you will be spending a lot more time working on this one, so it may be best to choose a niche that you are passionate about. When you create an authority website you will be adding a lot of new, good quality content to it and will continue to do so regularly. When you are writing about a topic you are passionate about then you are more likely to stay motivated to keep updating the blog long term. If you write about a topic that does not really interest you then you may lose motivation and your blog will never reach its full potential.

It is still important to do good keyword research so you can rank well in the search engines for your chosen niche.

Keyword Research

When choosing your main keyword you want to find a keyword or keyword phrase that has a good number of searches per month but does not have too much competition.

The top ten sites for your keywords are the important ones because these are the ones that you want to out rank so keep this in mind when researching your competition. If you find that the top ten sites for your chosen keywords are all large, authority sites then your chances of beating them may not be good. If the top ten sites have thousands of backlinks and are aged domains then they will be hard to beat. If the top ten sites are reasonably small to medium sites with domains that are not too old, then there is a good chance you can outrank them and do really well.

You want a keyword phrase that has a high demand otherwise you just won't have any visitors coming to your site. Choose a keyword phrase that has a minimum of 2,000 searches a month and preferably higher. Anything less than 2,000 is not worthwhile your time and effort.

When choosing a niche for your blog there are two options to choose from. You can either choose a niche that is based on a topic that you are passionate about, such as a hobby, or you can choose a niche based purely on how profitable that niche would be. Lets take a look at both of these options in more detail so you can decide which option you will choose.

Option 1 Choose a Niche Based On Profitability

If you choose this niche then you will need to do a bit of research to find the perfect niche for your blog. The first thing that you need to do is find out which niches tend to be the most profitable.

Some niches that are usually quite profitable are:

  • Weight loss
  • Make money
  • Health and fitness
  • Relationship/dating
  • Investing and retirement
  • Debt and money management
  • Time management
  • Personal development
  • Android technology
  • Internet marketing
  • Celebrities, music and movies
  • Luxury items
  • Careers and employment
  • Online games

These are just a few niches that people have successfully earned money with blogs and most likely will be hot niches in 2012 and 2013.

One problem with niches that are very profitable is that they are also very competitive. That should not turn you off a niche though as you can still create a blog and join those who are profitable in that niche. If you do decide to choose a niche based on profitability you will need to do good keyword research and base your blog around some keywords that are in high demand but dont have too much competition.

Option 2 Choose a Niche about a Topic That You Are Passionate About

It is much easier to choose a niche when you are choosing a topic that you are passionate about. Although, not all topics are going to be profitable so you will need to do some research to see how you can monetize your niche.

There are different ways that you can monetize a blog such as promoting a product as an affiliate or placing Google Adsense ads on your blog. If you can find products to promote in your niche then you can make some very good commissions. If there are no products in your niche that you can promote then you can still add Google Adsense ads to your blog and it can still be quite profitable. Blogs that are created around peoples interests might include dog training, sports, children, pregnancy, weight loss, hobbies, food and much more. There is really no limit to what you can blog about and most people will have something in their life that they are passionate about.

The biggest advantage to creating a blog about a topic that you love is that it is easier to stay motivated with your blog. You will also find it much easier to write about your interests that to write about a niche that you know nothing about.

If you would like to create a blog about something you are passionate about you will need to do some research to find out how much demand there is for this niche. You need to find out how many people search for this niche and find some good keywords that have high search numbers.

If you find that there are no or very few searches for your topic then it may not be a very profitable niche. If there are quite a few searches for your topic then start looking for products, either digital or physical, that you can promote on your blog.
